My (not so) little guy finally talked us into a sleepover. Each year his party has always just been a tad too warm to make it comfortable outside. This year we figured that an overnight outside in the tent would be okay this time of year... maybe we could even leave the rain guard off and do some star gazing as they fell asleep. Well, the best laid plans.... This year, it rained all day, and temperatures were only in the 50's, so we decided it was too damp and cool to be outside much! Wimpy, I know, but we didn't want to be responsible for getting everyone colds from the damp...
So we ended up using sheets, PVC pipes, and the back of the couch to turn our living room into an indoor campsite. G and his friends also made personal pizzas for dinner, took their bandanna and stick "hobo" bags with them (containing a water bottle and cool flashlight/glow stick) on a twilight scavenger hunt around the neighborhood, and decorated leather key fobs.
We also had fun watching them as they navigated a rope obstacle course in our dining room (it too was supposed to be outside!), did some rope tying tricks, and sat around our indoor "campfire" (G puts flashlights underneath orange sports cones with slits in the sides - it's surprisingly effective) and told ghost stories. We finally had to call quits to the fun at a late hour, only to have them all up and running around the house at 5:00 am! First they worked on Legos, then played Foosball, then at 6:30 I finally let them go outside to play (Sorry neighbors! 8 year olds don't know the meaning of quiet for very long). Pancakes and hot chocolate for breakfast.
The cake, which we had after dinner, used mainly colored licorice for decoration. Around the side it says "Happy Birthday". G said that his very favorite moment of his party was what is shown in the 2nd picture...
How many people get to roast their marshmallows over a candle on their cake?? After blowing out 8 of the 9 candles, he took the marshmallow from the Lego man and held it over the 9th candle. He caught it on fire, blew it out, and then ate the marshmallow! Definitely a fun cake!

Nathan would have been thrilled to do a sleepover! Sounds like a fun party. Too bad it got rained out, but sounds like they still had a great time.
