On our car trip home today, E was reading us a book about ocean life. There were some pretty big words in it. Phytoplankton for one. She got the word zooplankton with no problem. But phytoplankton gave her lots of trouble. It didn't help that it was on at least half the pages of the book! So, according to E (at first seriously and then in jest) the way to pronounce that is "plank-tonk-ton". I told her that reminds me of the Indian word for buffalo from Dances with Wolves "ta-tonka". Maybe it's some sort of new microscopic water buffalo? I told her she could remember that name and use it when she discovers a new species when she's older.
Meanwhile, we just might have to get a new fish and name it planktonkton!
